Have Church Buildings Hurt Christianity?

Back in March of 2019, a church in West Virginia called Freedom Ministries church ended up being burned down. When firefighters came to the scene, they found bibles inside the local church, completely untouched. Many Christians who saw the news said it was nothing short of a miracle. However, did you ever think that the fact that the building burnt down but not the bibles implies a deeper and overwhelming message to humanity?

Well, consider how the apostles worshiped back in the book of Acts:

Acts 2:46-And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Acts 5:42-And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

Judging from these two passages, the apostles met and worshiped in houses and not in big church buildings. Granted, the passages also mention meeting in a temple, which is probably the temple of Jerusalem. However, I do not think that is the same as the church buildings we have today.

Here's why I think the church building system we have in place has been doing more harm than good. You see, church buildings, and especially big ones, seem to give people a bad first impression of Christianity, considering there weren't big buildings like this in the time of the apostles. When they see these buildings, they think of dogmatic religion, legalism, and vain tradition. And not to mention, many Christians today only go to church on Sunday, sit and listen to a message, and just go home like nothing happened and don't bother to fellowship. Or at worst, if they do fellowship, they are being taught the wrong things and get brainwashed into thinking that church building's doctrine is the correct doctrine instead of reading the Bible for themselves.

At that point, these people are not following Christianity. They are following churchianity. If you follow only what a church teaches, then you are following that church instead of following Christ. Now, don't get me wrong, I do have a church I really like that I go to. I'm not saying that if you go to a church right now then you should leave. House churches are few and far between, and having fellowship in a good church is better than nothing. But just because you attend a church doesn't mean you should agree with every doctrine it teaches. Everything should be compared with what Scripture clearly states. Core doctrines must be followed, but also be careful not to stay in a legalistic church.

True Christianity is a relationship with God. In Christ, we are free. We are to follow Him and His teachings which is to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. We need to reach out to all people with love and compassion in the hope that they will have eternal life with us in Heaven. Letting others see Christ in you and telling them your testimony is the best way to evangelize. Be sure to think about all I've said and keep it in mind. God bless, everyone!
